What Should I Do About Rumors That I am Having an Affair with a Partner?

Dear Jane,

I work predominantly for one partner. The big matter we are on requires a lot of travel, including international travel.  One of my friends at the firm just told me there is a rumor going around that the two of us are having an affair.  What should I do?

Dear Only Working With Him,

Gossip is very hurtful and sometimes has a very long tail.  I’d like to tell you that you could do nothing and it will all blow over, but that may not happen.  Even if your friend is willing to tell you who he/she heard the rumor from, and you then confront that person, you aren’t likely to get at the “source” of the rumor.  Probably the most fruitful thing you can do is to talk to your mentor, or if you don’t have one, a partner you work with often.  Seek their advice, counsel and assistance with quieting the rumor mill (or at least countering the rumor mill).
