Dear Jane: Can I Check My Email During Meetings if a Partner Does?

Dear JaneDear Jane,

I work with one partner who checks his BlackBerry throughout team meetings.  Does that make it okay for me to do the same?

Dear Don’t Understand Meeting Protocol,

The mores of acceptable meeting behavior are very “local” – they can change from partner to partner, practice group to practice group, and client to client.  Look around and see what those in charge do during the meeting.  It is normally safe to emulate their behavior with regard to e-mail and texts during a meeting. When in doubt, however, don’t!
