Dear Jane: Is It OK to Get Drunk at an Event If You're Not Officially Representing the Firm?

Dear JaneDear Jane,

I’m a partner in a firm and attended a big civic event last night. An associate was there with her husband and both got sloppy drunk. Neither of us was there on behalf of the firm.

Signed,

Dear Didn’t Have My Firm on the Name Tag,

Oh, yes, you did!  While it is not fair, your behavior in public reflects not only on you personally but also on your employer.  It would be great if you sat down and talked to the associate about the inappropriateness of both of their behavior (and the potential consequences).  If you cannot bring yourself to invest in her in this way, at least don’t put her escapades out on the partner grapevine.
