Dear Jane: It's OK to Stop and Smell the Spring Flowers, Right?

Dear JaneDear Jane,

Things seem to have calmed down at the firm and work has picked up.  We’re busy, but not nearly as busy as we used to be.  Spring has finally arrived, and I’m thinking about enjoying it this year.

Signed,

The Sun Is Shining

Dear The Sun Is Shining,

Please do not set yourself up for failure.  Even at firms whose business has recovered from the economic downturn, there is a different view on talent than before the recession.  It remains critically important to demonstrate initiative and ownership of your career.  The easiest way to achieve this goal is by demonstrating overt commitment, which means billable hours.  If you don’t have enough billable hours then, unfortunately, face time is a factor.
