Dear Jane: My Reviews Are Great, But I'm Not Learning New Skills

by 352admin 28. February 2013 13:21

Dear Jane,

I’m on a very large matter and have been on this matter since I got to the firm. My role continues to be the same: due diligence and discovery.  My evaluations have been excellent.

Signed,

Document Queen

Dear Document Queen,

Congratulations on the excellent reviews, but at some point, they will not remain excellent if you haven’t continued to hone and grow your skills.  Are there other roles on your matter that you could ask to move into?  If not, seek out some other smaller billable matters or pro bono opportunities that would allow you to develop more skills.  If more junior people have been assigned to your large matter, look for opportunities to delegate the tasks you are comfortable with so you can (1) manage people and (2) free up your time for more skill-building assignments.
