Is Wearing Flip-Flops to Work So Bad?

Dear Jane,

I just rode up on the elevator with a partner who I just started working with.  I could tell from his face that he found my flip-flops out-of-line.   Should I say something to him?

Dear I Don’t Wear Them at Work,

What is your relationship with the partner?  If you have developed a good relationship, there is no downside to bringing it up, especially if you do so humorously.  If, on the other hand, the relationship is just developing, find more opportunities to meet with the partner face-to-face and ensure that your dress is well within the ranges of acceptable business attire for your office.  It’s definitely not a serious issue, but at the early point of a relationship, you do not want something as simple as flip-flops having a negative impact on your credibility.
