Is It Okay to Search for New Jobs?

Dear Jane,

I am starting to get calls from headhunters again… the market finally seems to be coming back. I’m not happy where I am, so I’m giving some serious consideration to looking and leaving. Any reason why I shouldn’t look around?

Dear Anything Is Better Than Here,

Running from something is not a good reason to leave. Instead, make a list of the pros and cons of your current employer. Then, make a list of what you are looking for in your next place of employment. Take an honest look at these two lists, and ask yourself whether things could change at your current place enough for you to get what you are looking for—if you articulated what you want and put together a game plan to get it. If you honestly do not think you can get what you want, your two lists will give you a good road map of what to look for in your next job, and that is a good reason to leave.
